What is a Survey?

“A Survey is defined as a research method used for collecting data from a pre-defined group of respondents to gain information in an organized and systematic manner about characteristics which we want  from some or all units of a population using well-defined concepts, methods and procedures, and sort such information into a useful summary format”.

Surveys have a variety of purposes and can be performed in many ways depending on the methodology chosen and the objectives to be achieved.

The data is usually obtained through the use of standardized procedures whose objective is to ensure that each respondent is able to answer the questions at a level playing field to avoid biased opinions that could influence the outcome of the research or study. A survey involves asking people for information through a questionnaire, which can be printed on  paper, although with the arrival of modern technologies it is more common to distribute questionnaire using digital media such as social sites, emails,URLs etc.
